The Coterie Theater

I was among a handful of artists who

painted on cut-out figures of characters

from plays produced by this theater. In addition to the figures below, I painted

the Tickets sign and made the clock above the window. You can barely make out the

entrance to the theater, it is in the shape

of a head in profile.

The former facade of the Coterie Theater

Kansas City, MO

Acrylic on wood. The figures were designed and cut out by the theater and then given to the artists to paint. They didn't want traditional portraits of the characters or people. Rather, they wanted elements that described them painted within the figure's shape.

Amelia Earhart

This is my favorite. Perhaps because she is a Kansas girl. One of her planes is painted in her head, her scarf is filled with clouds. The upper left is filled with a map of the ocean where she is believed to have become lost. There is a replication of a postage stamp bearing her image, a sunflower, and some newspaper articles. I don't know who that creature is beside Amelia, some kind of jester.

Anne Franck

You can't see it in this photo, but there is a glowing menorah painted in the region of Anne's head. Her diary and the yellow star are on her torso, bordered by barbed wire. We see Anne looking out over the city from her window and below are some of her favorite things, photos of movie stars.

Sherlock Holmes

This figure has a lot of references to Holmes and his life. He wrote many books on bees, so the books are in his legs and the bees appear everywhere. His Study in Scarlet is transformed into a study which has scarlet walls. There is a sign over a door with the number 4 on it representing The Sign of Four. There is much, much more, but even I have forgotten the references.

Sojourner Truth

Again, there is a glare on Ms. Truth's head. There is a painting of a field with workers in it under blue skies. A poster advertising one of her many speeches is in the lower area. A banner goes around her shoulders with the quotation, "Ain't I a woman?"

Titlewave Books

Seattle, WA

Acrylic on brick. This is a photo taken of me at work on part of the facade of the bookstore. It is a woman balancing on a ball which is on the nose of a seal. Within the pink ribbon, I wrote the phone number and e-mail address of the shop. Within the blue ribbon I wrote the hours of operation.

Promotional Back Board

Hen House Grocery Stores

Kansas City, MO

Acrylic on wood. This piece was commissioned for a cash giveaway in conjunction with a local radio station. I designed the bills to include the hen that the grocery stores use on their signs.

Interior wall at QNI, Inc.

Lee's Summit, MO

Acrylic. The client wanted the wall to look like a browser window.
